For years, choosing exterior paint colors meant standing in the paint aisle staring at hundreds of tiny paint chips and trying to imagine what they would look like on an entire house.
As someone who manages investment properties, I’ve always found that process frustrating. Looking at a two-inch paint sample and trying to picture it across 2,500 square feet of siding, trim, shutters, and garage doors requires a lot of imagination and more than a little luck.
Selecting exterior paint colors has honestly been one of my least favorite parts of any renovation project. Not because I don’t appreciate good curb appeal (I absolutely do) but because I’ve always struggled to visualize the finished product before the paint ever goes on the house…. and once the paint crew starts spraying, there’s really no turning back.
When you’re investing $10,000 to $15,000 in an exterior repaint, it’s not a decision you want to get wrong. Here in the Kansas City area, a quality paint job can typically last 8-10 years (sometimes even longer). That’s a long time to live with a color choice that looked great on a tiny paint chip but not on the actual house.
Recently, I started using AI to help solve that problem, and I don’t think I’ll ever go back.
Seeing the Finished Product Before Buying a Single Gallon
Instead of guessing what a color combination might look like, AI allowed me to upload a photo of the home and generate realistic renderings using actual paint colors.
What really impressed me was that I didn’t crop out the neighboring homes. In fact, I intentionally left them in the photo.
When I’m selecting exterior colors, I’m not just thinking about one house; I’m thinking about the entire street. I want the home to compliment the neighborhood, but I also don’t want it to disappear because it looks almost identical to the house next door or even one a few doors down.
By giving AI that additional context, it could evaluate the surrounding homes and suggest color combinations that fit the neighborhood while still giving the property its own identity. It wasn’t designing in a vacuum; it was considering the same things I was.
The difference was incredible!
Rather than debating between shades of gray or wondering if green shutters would be too bold, I could compare multiple versions side-by-side and instantly see which one looked best… not only on the house itself, but within the context of the entire streetscape.
Three Recent Examples
Here are three recent homes where AI helped narrow down the final paint selections.
Example 1: Brightening a Traditional Two-Story

The original taupe color had faded which made it feel somewhat hidden beneath the mature trees.
Using AI, we tested a lighter, warmer color palette that immediately made the home feel brighter, cleaner, and more inviting. The lighter siding also highlighted architectural details that had previously blended into the shadows. That along with the black shutters made things really “pop” in a classic colonial kind of way.
Most importantly, the new palette stood apart from neighboring homes while still looking like it belonged in the neighborhood.
Example 2: Modernizing with Sherwin-Williams Dorian Gray

For this home, we landed on:
- Body: Sherwin-Williams Dorian Gray (SW 7017)
- Trim: Shoji White (SW 7042)
- Garage Doors: Gauntlet Gray (SW 7019)
- Front Door: Iron Ore (SW 7069)
The AI rendering gave us confidence that the darker accents would provide just the right amount of contrast without making the home feel too dark.
Instead of hoping the combination would work, we could actually see it before ordering a single gallon of paint. This one was probably the most dramatic “before and after” transformation going from the faded green to this darker two-tone scheme.
Example 3: Adding Character with Dried Thyme

This home originally had a fairly standard Johnson County beige color scheme.
AI helped us explore something a little different while still maintaining broad market appeal.
The final selection included:
- Body: Sherwin-Williams Dried Thyme (SW 6186)
- Shutters: Pewter Green and Dried Thyme
The finished concept added depth and personality while maintaining a timeless appearance that prospective tenants and future buyers are likely to appreciate.
It’s a combination I wouldn’t have selected on my own, but after seeing the rendering, it quickly became my favorite option for this house with it sitting between a brown house on one side and charcoal colored house on the other.
It Didn’t Just Help Me—It Helped the Paint Crew
One unexpected benefit was how much easier communication became with our painters.
Instead of saying: “I’m thinking maybe a medium gray…not too dark…kind of like the house down the street…”
I could simply send them:
- The AI rendering
- The Sherwin-Williams paint colors and color numbers
- Exactly which colors belonged on the siding, trim, shutters, garage doors, and front door
There was virtually no room for misunderstanding. Everyone involved was looking at the same finished vision before the first ladder was set up.
Better Decisions Lead to Better Investments
For investment properties, curb appeal matters.
A freshly painted exterior can:
- Increase perceived value
- Generate more interest from prospective tenants
- Improve listing photos
- Help a property stand out online
- Protect the home’s exterior for years to come
When you’re making a five-figure investment that’s expected to last nearly a decade, choosing the right colors isn’t just about aesthetics… it’s about protecting your investment and maximizing its appeal!
AI Isn’t Replacing Experience—It’s Enhancing It
AI didn’t choose the colors for me.
It simply removed the biggest obstacle I’ve always faced: visualizing the final result.
Instead of making decisions based on tiny paint samples, I could evaluate realistic renderings of the actual home before spending thousands of dollars.
It also gave me the confidence to explore combinations I never would have considered otherwise. Sometimes seeing a color on an actual home completely changes your opinion. Other times it confirms that your original instinct was the right one. Either way, you’re making decisions based on something tangible instead of just on imagination.
That’s where I think AI really shines. It doesn’t replace experience or good judgment: it enhances them.
A Tool I’ll Continue Using
After using AI on these three homes, it’s become an important part of our exterior renovation process.
For property owners, it provides confidence before committing to invest thousands of dollars in work.
For our painting contractors, it creates clear expectations and eliminates much of the guesswork.
And for me personally, it has transformed one of the most frustrating parts of exterior renovations into a much simpler and efficient process.
We’ve come a long way from standing in the paint aisle trying to imagine what a tiny paint chip might look like on an entire house. Today, AI allows us to see realistic possibilities before a single gallon of paint is ordered, making it easier to make informed decisions with confidence.
