Posted by As we head into summer, we thought it would be a good reminder to encourage you to visit your local farmers’ market. It’s a great activity for a family outing early on a Saturday morning. The meat, produce, butter, baked goods, plants and more are wonderful. It’s not going to be less expensive than buying from a grocery store, but there’s no question the food will be tastier, healthier and grown locally. (Lots of feel good right there.)
Gearing up for your next Farmers’ Market (FM) outing:
- Early or late? Go early if you want the freshest produce. Go later if you want better deals. (Some vendors will haggle, but remember they’re working hard to grow, transport and sell their offerings!)
- Comfy shoes. Depending on the market you go to, you might be walking a bit to get there, walking to see all the stalls, etc.
- ALDI bags. If you’ve ever shopped at ALDI, you know that you have to supply your own bags. (Many people have large, sturdy ALDI bags in their car or garage.) Some stalls will provide shopping bags, but not all of them. And they do run out, so bring your own. It’s also a good effort because it cuts down on plastic and paper waste.
- Cash in small denominations. Many of the vendors can take a credit card for payment, but not all of them. And often, it’s just easier to exchange cash for goods at the FM. We recommend plenty of $1 and $5 dollar bills.
- A cooler with ice. If you’re going to be buying certain types of produce or cheese, it might be a good idea to have a cooler of ice in your vehicle. That way, if you want to shop and then hang out, your purchases will be protected from the heat until you are able to get home to the fridge.
